It's a bit like feeding newly planted plants, your surgeon has planted your grafts, next they need the best environment to grow to their full potential. That's where PRP comes in and at Growth Factor Hair Clinic, this is our specialty.
We have been treating patients like you who have had hair transplants in Turkey or UK or India for many years. Wherever you had your hair transplant, you are very welcome at Growth Factor Hair Clinic in Wales, UK.
How does PRP after hair transplant work?
PRP therapy uses the power of your own blood, tapping in to the amazing repair and regeneration abilities of your body. Platelets release natural chemicals called Growth Factors. When PRP is delivered into the scalp near to hair follicles, it stimulates the hair follicles to perform better.
Benefits of PRP after Hair Transplant
1. Effective
Scientific studies show that PRP therapy significantly improves hair density and thickness. Patients report high satisfaction levels following treatment. The most effective protocols typically involve multiple sessions, usually monthly for three to four months, followed by maintenance treatments.
2. Safe
PRP therapy is autologous, meaning it uses your own blood. The treatment involves injection of your own platelet rich plasma, made from your own blood. This means to risk of allergic reaction is extremely low. It is of utmost importance for your safety that PRP is prepared using:
-
Aseptic technique
This is where Dr Gwen Adey's 19 years of clinical experience matters.
-
A Medical Device Designed for PRP Creation
This is why we exclusively use RegenLab at Growth Factor Hair Clinic. As with many other Swiss exports, RegenLab provides an extremely high quality method of producing PRP. CE marked, pyrogen-free and designed for reproducible and safe method of creating PRP that works.
-
Single-Use Sterile disposable materials
Single-use sterile needles, syringes, medical device Regenlab BCT tube, transfer device, gloves, drapes, gauze.
The PRP Hair Treatment Procedure
Step 1: Consultation
Your treatment journey begins with a consultation to determine if PRP therapy is suitable for you.
Step 2: Blood Draw
A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, just like a routine blood test. The blood goes directly into your RegenLab BCT tube, which is a designated medical device for processing blood to PRP.
Step 3: PRP Preparation
The tube containing the blood is placed in the RegenLab centrifuge, which spins at high speeds to separate the platelets and plasma from other components. This process concentrates the platelets, creating your PRP.
Step 4: Injection
The PRP is then injected into the scalp in tiny droplet injections, using the air-driven U225. Treatment area is tailored to what you need. After droplet injection of the majority of PRP, you will be offered PRP microneedling using the U225, to further boost the PRP benefits
Step 5: Course of Treatment
For optimal results, patients usually undergo a series of treatments. Evidence supports 3-4 treatments, spaced approximately a month apart.
Step 6: Maintenance
Maintenance treatments are recommended twice per year to prolong and maintain your results.

Can PRP help my transplanted hair and the rest of my hair?

Yes, both transplanted hair grafts and your native hair that was not transplanted benefit from PRP. Your surgeon will be limited as to how many hairs they can transplant by the quantity and quality of your donor hair as well as how many grafts are feasible in one surgery. In UK, usually the maximum number of grafts is around 2000, while in countries like Turkey surgeons regularly go up to 3500 grafts. This means you may have areas of scalp that would benefit from treatment but there weren't enough grafts. This is where PRP comes in. PRP often in combination with DHT blockers can improve and maintain your native non-transplanted hair, giving you the best and most natural result. People always hate it when their hairline looks great after their transplant but they soon thin behind the new hairline.

PRP is quite amazing really that it uses what is already within you to help you improve your har - and it's safe and effective. No wonder so many patients love it!
What are Platelets in PRP?
Platelets are very small cells found on your blood that play a large role in stopping you from bleeding out when you get a cut. They clump together to form a clot, which ultimately saves your life every time you get a cut. But they don't stop there - they also play a huge role in the healing cascade, releasing chemical messengers called Growth Factors and recruiting other cell types to the site of injury to begin the process of healing a repair. This is where the magic happens.
What is Plasma in PRP?
Plasma is the yellow coloured fluid the blood cells are suspended in. It also has healing properties.
Who would not benefit from PRP?
Conditions in which hair follicles are completely lost (not just dormant) are unsuitable for treatment with PRP. This is because PRP can only improve the function of hair follicles but where hair follicles have been lost, there is nothing for the PRP to act on and no result would be expected.
How can I find out if PRP could be suitable for me?
You could book a consultation to get personalised advice. These are available face-to-face or virtual appointments via Zoom. Click here to book a clinic appointment or here to request a free virtual consultation.
How much does PRP After Hair Transplant Cost?
After spending thousands of pounds on your Hair Transplant, you may wonder if you need PRP as well. The thing is, PRP is a way to protect your investment and get the most from it.
Following a consultation, we will advise you personally, but we usually recommend 3 PRP treatments, about a month apart.
Each PRP treatment costs £330 individually or a course of three PRP treatments post- hair transplant is £900.
Your treatment will be performed by Dr Gwen Adey, using the Growth Factor Hair Clinic advanced protocol, using Regenlab medical devices and advanced injection technology for your most effective and comfortable PRP experience possible.
Can I Have PRP Treatment in the UK After a Hair Transplant Abroad?
The Short Answer: Yes.
Lots of people travel abroad for hair transplant surgery and then return home to the UK for healing and recovery.
We treat many patients after their hair transplants performed overseas, provided your transplant surgeon is happy for you to do so and the timing is appropriate. In fact, increasing numbers of hair transplant surgeons will tell their patients to do exactly this.
At Growth Factor Hair Clinic in South Wales, we regularly see patients who have travelled to Turkey and other international destinations for hair transplantation and are looking for specialist PRP support once they return to the UK.
Why Do Patients Seek PRP After a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant is only the beginning of the journey.
Once the grafts have been placed, they need to heal, establish a blood supply and eventually begin producing new hairs. This process takes many months.
PRP contains a concentrated mixture of platelets and naturally occurring Growth Factors taken from your own blood. These Growth Factors are involved in wound healing, tissue repair and the formation of new blood vessels.
Because of these properties, PRP is widely used by many hair transplant surgeons and hair restoration clinics as an adjunctive treatment alongside hair transplantation.
Potential benefits may include:
-
Supporting the healing process
-
Creating a favourable environment for newly transplanted grafts
-
Supporting blood vessel formation during healing
-
Reducing inflammation
-
Supporting recovery during the period when shock loss commonly occurs
-
Improving hair growth outcomes in some patients
It is important to recognise that hair transplantation itself is the primary treatment. PRP should be viewed as an adjunct to good surgery rather than a substitute for it. No amount of PRP can compensate for poor surgical planning, poor graft handling or poor donor management.
A useful analogy is that your surgeon plants the seeds. PRP may help create favourable growing conditions, but it cannot change the quality of the seeds themselves.
What Does The Evidence Say?
The scientific evidence for PRP after hair transplantation is encouraging, but it is not perfect.
A number of studies have reported improvements in outcomes such as hair density, hair counts, healing and patient satisfaction when PRP is used alongside hair transplantation. Some studies have also reported earlier visible hair growth compared with controls.
However, there are important limitations.
Different studies use different PRP preparation methods, different treatment schedules and different outcome measures, making direct comparison difficult. There is currently no universally accepted protocol regarding exactly how PRP should be prepared or when it should be administered after surgery.
For this reason, PRP should be considered a promising adjunctive therapy rather than a guaranteed method of improving outcomes.
As someone who spends a great deal of time reading the PRP literature, my view is that the biological rationale is strong and the published evidence is generally positive, but there are still questions that researchers are working to answer.
Will PRP Improve Graft Survival?
This is one of the most common questions patients ask.
The honest answer is that we do not know with certainty.
One of the challenges is that graft survival is surprisingly difficult to measure directly in clinical studies. Most research instead looks at outcomes such as:
-
Hair density
-
Hair counts
-
Hair thickness
-
Photographic improvement
-
Patient satisfaction
Several studies have reported improved hair growth outcomes when PRP is used alongside hair transplantation, but whether this is due to improved graft survival, enhanced healing, improved blood supply, changes in the hair cycle or a combination of factors remains unclear.
What we can say is that PRP is intended to support the biological processes involved in healing and recovery after transplantation.
When Should PRP Be Performed After A Hair Transplant?
The exact timing varies between clinics and surgeons.
Some surgeons perform PRP during the transplant procedure itself. Others perform it days, weeks or months later.
At Growth Factor Hair Clinic, we ideally perform the first PRP treatment around four weeks after a hair transplant, followed by additional treatments at approximately eight and twelve weeks.
By four weeks:
-
Initial healing has usually occurred
-
Scabs have resolved
-
The grafts are securely anchored
-
Patients are entering the period when shock loss often occurs
This timing allows PRP to be delivered into a scalp that has largely recovered from the immediate surgical trauma while still supporting the early stages of recovery and hair growth.
That said, every patient is different, and the recommendations of your transplant surgeon should always be respected.
What Should I Look For In A UK PRP Aftercare Clinic?
Not all PRP treatments are the same.
If you are considering PRP after a hair transplant, I would suggest asking a few important questions.
Does The Clinic Specialise In Hair Loss?
A clinic with a genuine focus on hair restoration is more likely to understand:
-
Hair transplant recovery
-
Shock loss
-
Donor area healing
-
Hair growth timelines
-
Medical hair loss treatments
-
Long-term hair preservation
What PRP System Do They Use?
Different PRP systems can produce very different products.
Ask:
-
How is the PRP prepared?
-
What equipment is used?
-
Is the treatment genuinely PRP?
-
Is there a clear treatment protocol?
Who Is Performing The Treatment?
You should know:
-
Who takes your blood
-
Who prepares the PRP
-
Who performs the injections
-
What training and experience they have
Do They Understand The Bigger Picture?
A good aftercare clinic should understand that a hair transplant is rarely the end of the hair loss journey.
The transplanted hairs may be permanent, but the surrounding native hairs can still continue to thin over time. Long-term planning remains important.
How Do I Coordinate With My Overseas Surgeon?
Good communication is always helpful.
Before arranging PRP treatment in the UK, consider asking your surgeon:
-
Are they happy for you to have PRP after surgery?
-
When do they recommend starting?
-
Do they have any restrictions or preferences?
It can also be useful to obtain:
-
Your operative report
-
Graft numbers
-
Photographs
-
Details of any complications
A reputable UK clinic should be happy to work alongside your overseas surgeon rather than attempting to replace them.
The goal is continuity of care and support throughout your recovery.
What If My Hair Transplant Was In Turkey?
Turkey remains one of the most popular destinations in the world for hair transplantation.
Many UK patients return home just a few days after surgery. Yet the most important stages of healing, recovery and hair growth happen over the following weeks and months.
Common questions include:
-
Is my healing normal?
-
Is this shock loss?
-
When should I start PRP?
-
When should I restart exercise?
-
When will the hairs begin growing?
-
What should I expect over the next twelve months?
Having access to local support can provide reassurance and practical guidance during this period.
