Trichoscopy Hair Loss Assessment

If you want to know:

  • "Why is my hair thinning?"

  • "Is this permanent?"

  • "Do I have androgenetic alopecia?"

  • "Am i wasting money on the wrong treatment?"

  • "Can anyone actually tell me what's going on?"

... you may want to consider trichoscopy.

Trichoscopy uses specific microscopes to examine the scalp and hair and we then interpret the images to look for clues and patterns often invisible to the naked eye.

In many cases, it gives valuable information to help us move from guesswork to a more evidence-based understanding of what may be happening with your hair and scalp.

What is Trichoscopy?

What To Expect During Trichoscopy Imaging

Trichoscopy imaging is completely painless.

We use a trichoscope microscope. We may use more than one type during your examination.

The trichoscope is positioned gently against your scalp and adjusted until the image is focused.

We then take photos through the dermatoscope of relevant areas of the scalp.

We mostly use non-contact dermoscopy, which means there is no glass plate touching your scalp.

We sometimes use contact dermoscopy as well and for this, we apply a small amount of contact fluid (ultrasound gel) to your scalp and then apply the trichoscope onto this.

We are able to save your trichoscope digital images directly into your secure clinical record for safe storage.

We may tell you our findings and interpretation straight away or we may give you preliminary findings and review your images further outside your appointment and communicate our conclusions later.

Preparation Tips To Get The Most Information from your Trichoscopy

Please wash your hair thoroughly before your appointment. If you have been using fibres or other products, please do a double wash to try to ensure your scalp is free of products which could make interpretation of your images more difficult.

Please do not apply any products to your hair or scalp before your trichoscopy imaging.
