Sweating Under Your Hair System or Wig? You May Have More Options Than You Realise

If you wear a wig, topper or hair system and you’re struggling with scalp sweating today, I’m thinking of you.

As I write this, temperatures in parts of the UK are climbing and it’s 32°C here in South Wales.

Whilst everyone is talking about sun cream, ice creams and paddling pools, you may have something else on your mind.

Sweating.

A hot, sweaty scalp.

The feeling of sweat building beneath your wig.

Your scalp feels hot, irritated and slippery.

You’re so aware of it.

You can’t wait to get home to take your wig off.

You’re considering going “topless” - that is, wig-less - in front of people you would never normally consider revealing your head to without wearing hair. Perhaps even in front of people who don’t know you wear hair.

If you wear a bonded hair system, it’s even more difficult because taking it off isn’t an option.

Or maybe you don’t wear hair at all and you wear your hair shaved but your scalp sweats too much and it really bothers you.

If that’s you, I want you to know you’re not alone.

Why Does It Happen?

We all know this bit.

Our scalps help regulate body temperature by producing sweat.

When you wear a wig, topper or hairpiece, airflow around the scalp is reduced and heat can become trapped.

As a result, sweating often becomes much more noticeable.

For many people, that’s simply part of wearing alternative hair during hot weather, exercise, or both.

But for some, it becomes a genuine quality-of-life issue.

The Thing I Recently Realised

I’ve been providing scalp sweat-reducing treatment for several years.

It lasts for up to six months, so many patients come for treatment twice per year.

Others come back once a year, usually in April or May before the warmer weather arrives.

What I’ve realised recently is that many people who could potentially benefit from this treatment don’t know it exists.

Time and time again, I hear the same thing:

“I didn’t know this was an option.”

“Why didn’t I know this was an option?”

“I wish I’d known about this sooner.”

Most people assume they just have to put up with excessive scalp sweating.

They don’t realise that treatments are available which may help reduce it.

Good News: You Have Options

Not everybody who wears a wig needs treatment or wants treatment.

But if you find yourself dreading warm weather every year because of sweating beneath your wig or hair system, you may have more options than you realise.

The aim isn’t to stop sweating completely. Sweating is normal and important.

The aim is simply to reduce excessive sweating and make life under a wig more comfortable.

For the right person, it can make a meaningful difference.

Could This Help You?

If you’re reading this and thinking:

“This sounds like me.”

“I struggle every summer.”

“I avoid certain situations because of sweating.”

Then it may be worth having a conversation.

If you’ve read this far, you may also be thinking:

“If this actually works, why isn’t everyone in the wig world talking about it?”

“What’s the catch?”

“Is it safe?”

“How does it work?”

The truth is that I don’t know of any other clinics offering this service, anywhere.

Perhaps that’s because it took someone like me - somebody who actually wears hair and has years of clinical experience using this treatment for other purposes - to put the pieces together and develop a medicine choice, method and delivery approach that actually works to help reduce scalp sweating in people affected by alopecia - and feels comfortable enough.

Growth Factor Hair Clinic is a boutique clinic. Every scalp sweat reducing treatment is personally provided by me, Dr Gwen Adey. It is never delegated.

We don’t advertise this service far and wide because there’s only one of me.

That, I suspect, is one reason many people have never heard of it.

One Final Thought

It’s six o’clock, still over 30 degrees, and I’m off to dip my feet back in the paddling pool and have another traffic light lolly.

But if you’re reading this wearing a wig, topper or hair system and struggling with scalp sweating today, I am thinking of you.

And I hope this blog has helped you realise something important.

You have options.
