Damp scalp application of topical dutasteride more effective than dry scalp?

A new study published online ahead of print has reported that applying a liposomal dutasteride formulation to damp scalp skin resulted in more dutasteride in the hair follicles than with application to dry skin.


In a laboratory model, follicular dutasteride levels were almost twice as high in damp skin samples compared with dry skin samples.


The researchers suggest that increased moisture may improve drug diffusion into hair follicles, potentially enhancing delivery of topical dutasteride.


However, there are several important limitations:

  • The full paper is not yet available

  • This was an in vitro animal study not a clinical trial in people

  • The effect may depend on the specific formulation used

  • We do not yet know whether improved follicular delivery translates into better hair growth outcomes


Nevertheless, the findings are interesting because they highlight an often-overlooked aspect of hair loss treatment: the condition of the scalp itself may influence how effectively a treatment reaches its target.


This study forms part of a growing body of evidence suggesting that treatment success depends not only on the active ingredient, but also on the delivery system, the scalp environment, and how the product is used.
